May 2010: Princess Louisa Inlet

Princess Louisa and Chatterbox Falls is truly a beautiful and magnificent place to visit!

We have been told that this area is ranked as one of the "top 10" cruising destinations in the world!

Jan and I tried to get here last year; but as you may know our trip was cut short when my step father "Earl" suddenly passed away.

This year was to be the year, and Jan convinced me that the trip could be made earlier than planned - before we had to be in Cowichan Bay to meet up with family. So needless to say,I had no real choice and we went for it! Gotta keep the wife happy!

This was a long journey; I will post some maps once we get settled in one spot long enough!

The ocean was like glass, the sun shining and the trip was amazing!

We witnessed two seals and thought one was injured and/or dying but later thought ... they were not suffering but doing a mating ritual dance - "Sex" in the middle of the ocean!

SV Syringa; a 44' Ketch going two knots through the rapids behind us!

We arrived early for Malibu Rapids and waited till slack.
We still had a 4 knot current against us and almost stalled halfway thru at 2 knots! Our boat only cruises at 6 knots. We are happy we made it ... otherwise Jan would have been in trouble for not waiting another half hour!

The docks at Chatterbox Falls!
Kozad is docked at the far end of the dock on the left.

This is Chatterbox Falls which tumbles 1,475' down a granite face to the ocean below!
We moved Kozad to the other end of the dock and this is the view we had for three days!

We took the dinghy for a ride in front of the falls!

While we were standing on the dock, we heard a thunderous crack and roar!
It was an avalanche!

Jan grabbed the camera and was able to capture the avalanche of snow and water!

There are very nice hiking trails; with the appropriate warnings!

The vegetation was brilliant shades of greens!
Plants of all sizes and shapes!

Jan standing beside an old growth cedar tree!
Or maybe a 2nd growth cedar?

We hit the flowering season; all sorts of very fragrant blossoms were along the trails!

Craig & Jan at Chatterbox Falls!

We were lucky and shared the dock with great people.
SV Concerto and MV Zulu

Malcom and Charlene from MV Zulu

Bob and Susan from SV Concerto were on their honeymoon!

MV Zulu's fabulous flybridge!
This is a 55' Hampton, a beautiful vessel!

Larry and Beth with their two Portugese Water Dogs, Galley and Bosun out for a dinghy ride!

The docks at Princess Louisa Inlet; Chatterbox Falls!

We went for a dinghy ride to explore all of the many waterfalls!

There were literally dozens of these waterfalls within the inlet!

We arranged for a camp fire and impromptu party for the dock dwellers on our last night!

Jan with Don & Pat from Birch Bay, SV Syringa, and John from England.
John and his daughter Kate chartered SV Serendity for a week out of Nanaimo!

Kate from England, Larry and Beth from SV Pearl JEM from Orchard Bay, Wa.
We all had a good time visiting and enjoying the refreshments and camp fire!

The next morning (Tuesday the 18th May) was rainy with low cloud
when all 6 boats left the dock and headed south!
